How To Keep Your Cat Safe

Obviously, we all know that cats themselves are quite curious creatures but this isn’t always a good thing. There are a few things around our homes that may be a bit dangerous for your cat. We have 10 essential cat tips for you to keep your cat safe around your home.

10. Cleaning Products

If you’re going to use cleaning products such as disinfectants or anything like that around surfaces that your cat can get to, make sure that when you have used it you wipe and dry the surface down as much as you can with paper towels. So that when your cat goes into the surface it doesn’t go into their paws. Just like us, harsh chemicals can be very dangerous if ingested or inhaled and can lead to things like diarrhea, vomiting, and seizures.

Again- keep these cleaning products away from your cat in cupboards that they can’t get to.

9. Medication

Medications such as antidepressants, painkillers, cough and cold medicines, dietary supplements are things we have in our homes and they are very dangerous to our cats. Make sure things like these are locked away in cupboards high up out of your cats reach and nowhere they can knock them over and take a little nibble.

8. Antifreeze

It’s well known that antifreeze is irresistible to cats and they are very attracted by its smell but if it’s ingested it is deadly. So it’s very important to remember if you are using it, just use it away from your cat and mop up any spillages that may occur.

When you’re not using antifreeze, make sure that it is in a cupboard away from where your cat can get to but if you have a particularly clever cat that knows how to open cupboards maybe try installing baby locks.

In the colder months or if you live somewhere particularly cold, make sure before you use your car that you check underneath it quickly just to see if any cats are on there having a little sneeze.
Sometimes when it’s cold, cats like to go into the wheels for a nice warm nap and to keep away from the cold.

4. Blind & Curtain Ties

cat safety tips

Our cats are not going to be able to resist playing with curtain and blind ties as they’re just dangling there waiting to get puttered around, but cats can get tangled up in them and even strangle themselves. It’s best to keep them looped up out of reach of your cat.

3. Small Objects

cat safety tips

Dental floss, rubber bands, hair ties, and earbuds are all small enough to be dropped unnoticed and if you have a particular chewy cat, these can be ingested and cause serious problems and blockages.

Make sure that you have these things away from your cat and if you do use them, make sure that you put them away properly afterward.

2. Washing Machines & Tumble Dryers

when the doors are open, i don’t know how many cats that would be able to resist crawling into a nice dark warm space for a little nap. So make sure before you use your washing machine or tumble dryer to have a quick peek in there just to make sure that there are no sleeping moggies.

When you’re not using your washing machine or tumble dryer, make sure the doors are firmly closed so no cat can be tempted enough to go in there for a little sleep.

1. Wires

cat safety tips

Some cats like to chew wires maybe out of boredom or they just like the way that it feels in their mouth, But it’s very important that you keep these out of the reach of your cat.

The best way to do it is either cover them up with rugs or furniture or if you have a room that particularly has a lot of wires in it like a study or an office, maybe try to keep your cat out of that room. You can also buy tubing to go over wires and that will keep them out of reach for your cat or you can just maybe tape them to the floor.
